Nigerians have ex pressed regret that 10 years after the
assassination of the former Minister for Justice and Attorney General of
the Federation, Chief Bola Ige, his killers were yet to be found, just
as they felt disturbed about the current state of insecurity in the
country, noting that it might create grounds for revolution like the
ones experienced in Libya, Egypt and Tunisia.
Speaking at a
colloquium organised by Bola Ige Centre for Justice in conjunction with
the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, speakers who spoke in turn,
noted that nothing has improved since Chief Ige was murdered, rather
things have gone from bad to worse.
They noted that despite all
the promises made that his killers would be brought to book, 10 years
later, it was disheartening that his killers were yet to be found. They
however concluded that it would amount to one of the wonders of modern
world if the Nigeria Police could eventually solve the riddle of his
murder.
Speaking as the guest lecturer, former Vice chancellor of
the University of Ado Ekiti (UNAD), Professor Akin Oyebode, said those
who killed Bola Ige were enemies of the country who never wished it
well, saying “that he had to be physically eliminated by those who did
not wish the nation well bespeaks his uncanny power, authority and
influence in the scheme of things in the country. Since his exit, it is
quite an understatement to say that things have not been the same in our
political situation.”
He explained that it was in the interest of
the nation to assess Bola Ige’s legacies and see how the country has
fared since his brutal exit. He noted that the collapse of public
infrastructure, roads, hospitals and educational institution, mass
unemployment, lack of basic amenities and general insecurity should
inform any discernable observer that the country was on tenterhooks.
“That
even conservative elements within the ruling class have since been
sounding alarms of an impending revolution would tend to suggest that
Nigeria version of the Arab spring is quite imminent.”
